Katsushika Hokusai:
The complete 36 views of the Fuji

His work
The pictures on Visipix:
The set consists of 46 large woodblocks (Oban size 0 x 14 inches). “The Great Wave Off Kanagawa”, number 1 of the series is one of the most famous pictures in the world.

Until now, we couldn’t locate any good repros anywhere. I looked in many library catalogues, asked in Japanese bookstores in San Franzisco, New York etc. I phoned museums and begged for a permission to photograph originals. I asked Sothebys who auctioned an excellent set for nearly 2 million USD. Finally, somehow I got all the repros completed. The set is better than anything else we have seen but far from perfect.

We publish also in facsimile quality a set of contemporary “Showa impressions”. Several publishers repeat Hokusais original production around 1830 since some dozen years. They take Hokusais draft or a copy. Then first class woodcutters, paper makers and printers do exactly what their collegues had done 100 years ago. Anyway Hokusai did not cut woodblocks himself. As works of art, the new woodblocks do not differ from the old ones.

We started to reassemble a full set. Now we have 32 woodblocks. In a year we expect to publish the complete set.
